Authors Note (3/23/2015): I just saw these at Wal-Mart for $1 a package. They taste exactly like bubble gum!
Now back to our original programming....
Who'd a thunk it? Nearly two years and 100 posts later the 'Creek is still on the air (err, monitor-tablet-phone, whatever.) I usually don't do racy things, but since it's almost Easter I wanted to do something different for my peeps!
Peeps were invented in 1935 and only visited around Easter. In 1953 it took 27 hours to make a Peep. Now it takes six minutes. For Easter, they make 5 million a day to meet demand. Approximately 700 million Peeps are sold each Easter, making it the most popular non-chocolate Easter candy (beating out jelly beans!)
They were yellow chicks you'd get in your Easter basket. They weren't a sudden sensation because if you ask around, few people really like to eat them. They used to be flavorless marshmallows, dipped in sugar. Cute, but that was about it. The best way to eat them is stale. Just open the package and let them sit. At least then they are chewy. Audra and I made decent rice crispy bars using them. Some sickos like to blow them up in microwaves, but I think it's cruel---not to mention a sticky mess!
I don't know what happened, but they became a craze and started coming out in different shapes, colors and even flavors! They have museum with a gift shop, a peep-mobile, website and facebook page. I ran into Wal-Mart the other day and saw a blue with sprinkles birthday cake flavor to celebrate their, what else, birthday--actually 60th birthday! Haven't tried them yet, but probably will. Will still likely wait until they are stale!
